Clothing as Self Portraits - A dichotomy of culture translated into fashion.
The Beauty of one’s Journey
Culture as a collection
This collection allows the opportunity for opposing cultures to experience new forms, and admire different views of understanding.
A definition of a dichotomy is the ‘divison or contrast of 2 things represented as being opposed or entirely different’. This concept of comparison explains my vision on clothing as a self-portrait, as the collection looks at a dichotomy between Arabian and Western semiotics. Thus the aim of this collection is to show how seeing through multiple cultural perspectives can bring about it a mysterious beauty.
The concept of ‘Clothing as Self-Portraits’ gives clothes a platform to communicate more about the wearer than functionality or aesthetic. It brings elements of personal interest and cultural influence into textures, prints, shape or jewellery forms. Lavish luxury clashes with Bedouin nomadic lifestyle to create a combination which compliments and enhances our view of amalgamation of existence.
This womenswear collection provides a capsule wardrobe, previewing ten designed outfits, of which three have been produced. Semiotics in this collection explores the tension of shapes which evolve through layers of material or form, but also at the layers of cultural understanding. It looks at the historical influence of Bedouin tribe in the Middle East and clashes it with new proportions of Western luxury, superimposed with inspirations from Anish Kapoor’s manner of manipulation of our environment.
